Lake Geneva Hosts U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition

snow-sculpting-2016-champs-300x200When the snow starts piling up, most people want to go out and build their finest snowman and sturdiest fort. For more creative people, a snowman may be too mainstream and not enough of a challenge. Our residents in the area are encouraged to come to the only U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition in the country which has been hosted in Lake Geneva for over 20 years! The competition showcases the best snow sculpting teams from across the country including Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, Colorado and Alaska to the surrounding states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

One of the most interesting parts of the national competition is how the winners are selected. Gold, silver and bronze winners are determined by the votes from artists themselves, and of course, they cannot vote for their own work. The judging criteria is based on creativity, technique and message. Previous winners are encouraged to attend the event to pick their favorite and Winterfest attendees get to join in on the fun by naming a “People’s Champion” sculpture.

The snow sculpting competition is part of Lake Geneva’s two-week Winterfest, which celebrates art, winter, family and fun. The sculpting competition begins in downtown Lake Geneva on Wednesday, February 1 and runs through Sunday, February 5. Winterfest continues into the following week on Monday, February 6 through Sunday, February 12 with a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to the talented fifteen teams that will be working tirelessly for three days to create magical sculptures, there will also be music, refreshments, activities, helicopter rides, shopping and dining. Winterfest is also home to a Human Dog Sled Race, The Abominable Snow Race, magic shows, and a chili cook-off. There will be something for all age groups in Lake Geneva!
