Healthy Habits: Spring Maintenance

Lately, many of us are facing more time at home than we’ve ever previously experienced. Maybe this time at home has really gotten some of you down and you’re unsure how to spend your time on a day-to-day basis. During this situation these feelings can be completely normal. However, it’s important to be conscious of those feelings so that you can find ways to combat them! Research has shown that unhappiness can be reduced through the simple act of cleaning. A clean house can promote restfulness, relaxation, and less stress. Spring cleaning–especially during these times–is a great way to get to all of the household chores you’ve been saving for later.

To begin your spring cleaning, create a list to stay organized and stay on task! Your list should include decluttering, deep cleaning, and cleaning the outside of your home. Since many of us are spending more time inside than usual, getting outside to clean can be a productive and exciting way to get some variety in your day-to-day activities. Once you’ve made your list, you can choose to begin your cleaning from the inside-out or the outside-in.

Let’s start with decluttering your inside spaces.

Decluttering can be a week long project if you want it to be. Choose one room at a time so as not to get overwhelmed, and then rotate throughout rooms as the days go on. When looking through your kitchen cabinets, coat closets, etc., ask yourself “when was the last time I used this?” If an answer doesn’t come to mind, it’s probably time to donate that item. Decluttering leads to de-stressing and is a productive way to occupy your mind. If you need some motivation, follow this schedule: Monday – declutter kitchen, Tuesday – bathrooms, Wednesday – bedrooms, Thursday –  common areas such as the living room and basement, Friday – closets. Having a schedule for the week can help with staying on task and bringing some structure back into your life.

Once the decluttering is finished, you might feel like you’re on a roll! Move into deep cleanings.  Similar to decluttering, deep cleaning can be done throughout the entire week or in one day. Make it a family affair and assign a cleaning job to each person. Take before and after pictures and see who did the best job. Make it a fun game!

Although keeping the inside of the house clean is important, don’t forget about keeping the outside presentable as well!

Outside cleaning is the next step

Start your outdoor cleaning by getting a good look at your roof with the help of a ladder. Roof maintenance is important, especially in the Midwest. Snow and cold weather can lead to  a buildup of debris in the gutters. Another outdoor feature to add to your spring cleaning list is your windows. After taking care of your roof, this will seem like a breeze! The outside of the windows often get neglected, so use this time to make your windows truly sparkle! Here’s a cleaner recipe that is easily made from household items: mix one cup of water, one cup of rubbing alcohol, and one teaspoon of white vinegar. Find a soft cloth to do the cleaning with and viola, sparkling windows to welcome the spring time! While cleaning your windows, be sure to check for cracks and leaks to avoid air loss throughout the year.

If you have a deck, now is the time to maintain that as well. Take the broom out of the garage and sweep off the dust and cobwebs. Hook up the hose and wash the deck before you put out the deck furniture.

Lastly, turn your attention to your lawn. Now is the time to create the lawn you’ve always wanted and really catch the eye of people driving past your home. Be sure to mow, get rid of any weeds, and maybe create a new hobby by planting some beautiful flowers to add some color to your home!

Although our options for entertainment are a bit limited right now, ordering seeds online is always an option. If you’re not too keen on starting an outdoor garden during this time, consider an indoor herb garden. It will brighten up your space and also promote healthy airflow throughout your home. Some of the best herbs to grow indoors are basil, parsley, thyme and oregano to name a few.
