Wildlife Refuge Authorized Near McHenry New Homes

McHenry new homeMcHenry residents will soon be able to enjoy nature at the new Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. Recently authorized by the federal government, this refuge will provide for the restoration of the tall grass prairies and oak savannas of Illinois and Wisconsin. With 11,200 acres of the refuge scheduled to be located in McHenry County, nature can soon be enjoyed near your McHenry new home.

The project is a long term project and the refuge will not be officially established until U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service purchases the first parcel of land.  Hackmatack will be a home for 109 species of animals – including birds, fish, mussels, reptiles and one amphibian – and 47 plants. It will be comprised of land and land conservation easements acquired through voluntary sales or donations.

Hackamatack will be unique because of its close proximity to a large urban area. Once open, children from McHenry County, as well as nearby Chicago, will have the unique opportunity to experience environmental education. The Midwest has some of the most unique landscapes including the refuge’s namesake, the “Hackmatack,” which is a Native American word for the Tamarack tree found in local wetlands.

Studies have also shown that wildlife refuges can positively contribute to the local economy, as well as the quality of water in wells and the local aquifer. For more information on the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, visit www.fws.gov/midwest/planning/Hackmatack/.
